In this guide, we’ll walk you through exactly how to set up WordPress MCP with Cursor AI, step by step, so you can start automating your WordPress workflow today.
What Is WordPress MCP?
MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. In simple terms, it gives an AI agent context and understanding about a specific tool or platform you want it to work with in this case, WordPress. Once connected, Cursor AI can “see” and interact with your WordPress site: reading posts, creating pages, managing comments, and more, based on the permissions you allow.
What You Can Do With Cursor AI + WordPress MCP
Once the connection is set up, you can use Cursor AI to:
- Create blog posts directly inside WordPress, no copy-pasting required
- Analyze existing content and improve SEO
- Review, manage, or remove spam comments
- Build Elementor page layouts automatically
- Read and manage media, users, and site data
Let’s get into the step-by-step setup process.
Step 1: Download the Required Plugins
To connect Cursor AI with WordPress, you’ll need two plugins from GitHub:
- MCP Adapter
- WordPress MCP (WSP WordPress MCP) handles WordPress “abilities” (the API that defines what the AI can access)
For both repositories, go to the Releases section on GitHub and download the latest .zip file. At the time of this tutorial, the latest release was version 0.5.0.
Step 2: Install and Activate the Plugins
Once both plugin files are downloaded:
- Log into your WordPress dashboard
- Go to Plugins → Add Plugin → Upload Plugin
- Upload and install both plugins one at a time
- Activate each plugin after installing
After activation, you’ll notice a new MCP menu option appear in your WordPress dashboard sidebar.
Step 3: Configure AI Agent Abilities
Click on MCP → Settings to control exactly what your AI agent is allowed to do. This is where “abilities” come in think of them as permission toggles for each part of WordPress.
You can enable or disable access for:
- Posts (read/write)
- Pages
- Taxonomy

- Elementor (if the Elementor plugin is installed)

After saving your abilities:
- Click on Config Files inside the MCP settings
- Select Cursor from the list of supported AI agents (Claude, Codex, and Antigravity are also supported, with separate tutorials available)
- Copy the generated configuration file
Step 5: Add the Config to Cursor AI
Now switch over to Cursor:
- Click the Settings (gear) icon
- Navigate to Tools and MCP
- Click Add Custom MCP
- Paste the config file you copied from WordPress
Step 6: Generate a WordPress Application Password
The config file includes a dummy application password placeholder that you need to replace with a real one. Here’s how to generate it:
- In WordPress, go to Users → All Users
- Click Edit on your user profile
- Scroll down to the Application Passwords section
- Enter a name (e.g., “Cursor AI”) the name doesn’t matter, but the generated password does
- Click Add Application Password
- Copy the generated password immediately
⚠️ Important: This application password functions like a secret key. Don’t share it with anyone, and consider deleting it once you’re done testing.
Step 7: Update and Save the Config File
Go back to Cursor and replace the dummy application password in the config file with the one you just copied from WordPress. Save the file:
- Mac:
Command + S - Windows:
Control + S
Once saved, close the sidebar. You should now see your WordPress MCP server listed with the available tools confirming the connection is live.
Step 8: Test the Connection
Time to put it to work. In Cursor, create a new agent chat and try a prompt like:
“Please create a new blog post related to how to rank my website in Google.”
Cursor AI will use the connected MCP server to generate the content and publish it directly to your WordPress site complete with a proper H1 heading and SEO-friendly structure. No manual copy-pasting needed.
Note: The first request may take a little longer to process, especially on free-tier AI models, since the agent needs to build context about your site. Subsequent requests are typically much faster.
Step 9: Enable Elementor Support (Optional)
If you use Elementor for page building, WordPress MCP supports that too:
- Install and activate the Elementor plugin
- Return to MCP → Settings
- Scroll down to find new Elementor abilities, including:
- Listing Elementor pages
- Creating new Elementor pages
- Updating elements and adding widgets
This currently works with Elementor Free, with more advanced features planned for Elementor Pro support in the future.
